Question:
I have an old TV which I want to use to watch DVDs in my bedroom. I want to get a cheap DVD player to go with it. The TV has no SCART socket - only the coax socket
My current DVD player has SCART and S-Video but nothing that will connect to the coax socket on my old TV.
What are my options for using this old TV?
Well if your current dvd player has an option to disable macrovision you could buy a cheap vcr and use that with the tv and dvd player. Basically connecting the dvd player to the vcr using composite and watching dvds through the vcr by using the av channel of the vcr. A new basic vcr costs about £40 or more. You might be able to get an rf modulator to connect to the dvd player and tv not sure of price and not sure how good they are with the poor sync of macrovision. Again safer if the dvd player is macrovision free.
Do you use a vcr with this tv already?
What make and model is the dvd player?
I have an Alba DVD103.
I wondered if ANY DVD players output to the coax socket - I suspect not. I have used a VCR with this TV - works fine.
Combined dvd/vcrs have them as obviously the vcr section needs a tuner to record stuff and the dvd player makes use of the same rf modulator as the vcr. The Alba DVD103 seems to be permantly macrovision enabled so couldn't be used through a vcr to get dvd playback on the television via composite.
I would imagine that both the PlayStation2 and the Xbox, equipped with RF adaptors, could serve as DVD players on your old TV. I hope you're not hoping to get NTSC playback from R1 discs though!
