Question:
Hi there, I have recently bought a Toshiba SD330 from Amazon and am amazed by the quality of picture and sound, it really is excellent. However it has left me with a dilema.
I now need a 5.1 home theatre package with amp and speakers and whilst searching I came across the Toshiba SD-43HK all in one kit.
It is only £219 here - http://www.rgbdirect.co.uk/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=1532&ReferrerCode=2
so is about the same price I would have to pay for an amp and speakers and the fact of not having to have another piece of separate hardware appeals to me.
Question I ask is do you think the quality of picture & sound will be the same as that of the SD330 or will it not be as good due to it being an all-in-one jobby. My previous all-in-one was the Sanyo 750 but it lacked power in the sound and the picture was patchy.
It is listed as a NEW product on the Toshiba website as is the SD330 so I would guess they came out around the same time.
It has component out which I want for my Projector and the added bonus of having a radio built in.
I could always return the SD330 to Amazon you see.
Anyone seen one in action? I can't find any online reviews anywhere.
anyone?
only my twopenneth here wozzer, but I would sincerely doubt the DVD player in the kit would be even two thirds as good as the 330 which is supposed to hold its own in the £100 to £200 price range (discounting the special Amazon price).
You'd be better off getting a speaker set deal from richer.
I actually emailed Toshiba earlier today with this:
Hi there - I have just purchased your SD-330 and am very
impressed by the picture and sound. However I now need an amp and speaker to enable me to experience Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS sound. Looking round I noticed you have this new all in one package for sale.
I am considering purchasing this and returning my 330 prividing you can answer these few questions.
Is the quality of picture and sound the same as that of the 330 or has it been comprimised with the addition of the tuner/amplifier etc?
Does it have component output? The spec guide on your website sayd so on the breif description but when you click specs it doesn't list it.
I have had 4 DVD player in my time and the Toshiba SD330 is by far the best quality player I have seem. I want to purchase the SD-43HK but would be disappointed if it didn't live up the standards set by the SD-330.
Many thanks, I would appreciate it if you could reply via email.

Warren
Fair play to them, they replied with this:
Dear, Mr Davies
Thank you for your recent enquiry. Please find the information that you requested as follows:
There should be no quality difference between the SD330 and the SD43HK. Picture and sound quality are dictated by the television itself and the signal sent and received by the DVD player and television. the SD43 does, indeed, have component output.
To some degree, quality is subjective, I would suggest that anyone concerned by sound, and picture quality, before purchasing this or any make or model, check out the quality of the output of the appliance, in the shop.

However I agree with you stormyweather, I can't see it being as good a machine as the SD330.
Only thing is the extra piece of AV hardware, I already have a TiVo, Sky, DVD, VHS, Projector and screen, Xbox and then a Marantz separates HI-FI. Not looking too good on the wife friendly factor.:D
You shouldn't expect two dvd players in the same range to have the same performance mainly because different features make use of different chipsets and an all in one may use a different chipset to a standalone player. Also companies like Toshiba farm out work to various low cost factories in china etc and different factories, different designs and different chipsets used all lead to massive variation in performance. Also all in ones do tend to have a few compromises in getting everything into the same case. Perhaps the dvd loader is a very compact mechanism and the main dvd circuitry is reduced to a tiny percentage of the pcb to make way for audio amplification circuitry.
The main point really though is this home cinema toshiba any good? The sound may be rubbish and therefore a bad move.
I would definitely wait until you see some reviews. In fact I think I may have seen this system reviewed and it wasn't a good review so be warned.
Cheers Bonzo. I have only seen reviews of it's predecessor the SD-42K and all of which stated that the sound from the sub was poor. I asked the question to Toshiba:
Gary,
Many thanks for the swift reply. I have been looking round for independant reviews of the SD43HK but so far have been unable to find any due to it being new on the scene. I have however managed to read various reviews of the SD42HK and all of them picked up on the fact the sub-woofer was fairly quiet and lacked power compared to other all in one systems. Has this been rectified with the SD43HK?
Apologies for all the questions but I have yet to locate one in a store near me and I would be ordering from the Internet anyway as the price is much cheaper than the high street.
Kind regards
Warren
and fair play to them they replied within the hour:
The Subwoofer output for the SD-43HK has been increased to 70W from the previous 35W for the Subwoofer on the SD-42HK.
