Question:
Hi all,
Just bought a Tosh SD330 from Richer Sounds - and it's fantastic! I thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for a cheap but brilliant quality player. The picture quality is fantastic
But... Region 1 discs are getting shown as black and white. :( I've tried changing from AUTO to PAL in the output settings screen, but that just stops it from picking up region 1s altogether.
It's connected via a scart cable to the single scart socket I have on my TV (not RGB, as far as I know), which is a good 7 seven years old... Is it that my TV just won't accept NTSC input properly? Is there some other setting on the player I need to be using?
Any help much appreciated
Thanks,
Andy

I think you've hit the nail on the head there, but the way I fixed it on my old TV was using an RGB cable (which shouldn't have worked but did). I also fiddled a lot with the TV output settings on the player, like RGB, S-Video etc. If that doesn't do the job, use the other video connectors on the back of your player towards the appropriate connector on your TV.
Thanks Feroze - I'll see if I can find an RGB cable to try out..
The TV only has a single scart lead; no SVideo or composite or whatever.. :( Time for a new telly, perhaps

Couldn't agree more! Fantastic bit of kit, nice menus, awesome picture quality... Just a bit disappointed I can't watch my R1s :(
True mate im ok but would be a bit gutted if i bought and then had to fork out for a tv. Although if you do get a new tv you will be even more amazed.
I have a jvc 32" with a oxygen free flat ribbon scart , pic and sound are brilliant.
79quid multi region. I saw this in currys the other week region2 for 139quid. So we have ourselves a bargain.
The only problem on these machines ,if you can call it a problem is the lack of PAL60 output. So if your tv will not accept NTSC,you are in trouble.

I certainly don't call it a problem. If you have a tv that copes with a 60hz frame rate but can't do ntsc colour just use a scart rgb lead to eliminate the problem and give you the best possible picture at the same time. The amount of setups out there that benefit from pal60 is surely very small. The Tosh at least gives you all connection options with composite, s-video, component and scart rgb.
Most problematic tvs don't do 60hz at all and then ntsc to pal conversion would be useful which sadly neither the pioneer or toshiba have as far as I know but most chinese players do. Not that the Pioneer or Toshiba aren't chinese made of course.
Hi all,
I managed to fix this over the weekend, by choosing "RGB" instead of "Video" in the setup screen. Now, I know for a fact that my telly's scart socket is not RGB, nor is the scart lead I'm using, but it works anyway! The picture's fine
Thanks for all your suggestions. Looks like I can hang on to my telly for now...

Mate, Amazon are currently selling this for £79.99 at the moment so if you paid £109.99 at Richer Sounds print off a copy of the Amazon page and take it in with your receipt and Richer Sounds will beat it by £10 saving you £40. This has to be done up to 7 days after purchase
Cheers, CookieMonster - that's exactly what I did :D:D
They didn't beat it by £10 though   Just matched the £79.99... Should they have done?
Whatever, it's a stonking player, and well worth £80 of anyone's mahoney :)

They should have beaten it by £10. Just print off the price beat page off their website.
I bought one for my dad's birthday, and installed it today - I didn't have high hopes for its ability to play back R1 discs (if I remember rightly, he bought his Sony telly in the late 1980s or the early 1990s at the absolute latest), but in the event the combo worked beautifully - colour and all!
I doubt he'll ever bother ordering an R1 disc for himself, but I can certainly see myself lending him some of mine, so that's terrific news.
