Toshiba SD330 - Picture Quality?
Question:

Recently replaced my Pioneer DV-350 with a Tosh SD330 as the Pioneer wouldn't play some of my discs. Have it scarted directly to my TV, which is how I've always connected my dvd players, and am slightly underwhelmed by the picture quality! Text looks fuzzy and picture is generally not very sharp and rather grainy looking.. on NSTC discs the picture is virtually VHS quality. Have checked the accompanying manual and double checked all the settings are right but other than suggesting I reduce the sharpness of my TV, which I've done and did help slightly, I can't think what else to do... I'm assuming all the rave reviews about this player must mean this isn't standard! Any help/advice appreciated.

Answers:

I just recieved my Toshiba SD330 (Electro Centre) today along with a Thor scart cable for £20 (Ebay).
My god the picture was so much better then my previous Philps matchline 985 dvd player i had.
I have a average Sony 32" 50hz widescreen but i could tell the difference straight away.
There something wrong with your tv setup or maybe the dvd players own pre defined colour settings.

Answers:

Sounds like the DVD player isn't set to RGB output. It makes all the difference. Presumably, if you're used to better, your TV and SCART cable are RGB-capable.

I'm absolutely delighted with my Toshiba 330, and I haven't noticed any obvious difference between the picture quality on it and my longstanding main player, a rather more expensive and elaborate Toshiba 500.
So I agree with NikBorton - there's definitely something wrong, and I'd eliminate the connections before investigating further.

Answers:

Picture is unbelievable for the price.
Either your settings are wrong or there's something wrong with it.

Sounds like it's not set to RGB to me?

Answers:

Or you've plugged it into an RGB-incapable SCART socket on your telly?
Fuzz around the player menu text is usually a dead giveaway that you're using composite.

Answers:

All the same, even if you are using composite, it should still be an excellent picture (Certainly compared to VHS), though RGB or even S-video is much better.
This sounds suspicious to me. Any chance maybe you could borrow a friend's DVD player (Make doesn't matter) and compare it to that. If his/her player is better than the Tosh, and you old one was - then it sounds like your player is a duff one. Engineer jobbie - or better still exchange.

Answers:

Rather oddly I purchased a Toshiba 220 when they first came out last September, and found the picture quality wasn't as good as the Sony I had before. I returned the Tosh, and bought another Sony, and the picture was much better with less "blocking" in the image.

Answers:

The picture quality on my 330 is a massive step up from my old 110,very cinematic and almost 3d.
It is also very good at cd replay thru the digital output, comparable with a good standalone cd player.
The only film i thought looked very poor was Gattaca on superbit....................!!??

Thanks for all the feedback. Tried switching the setting on the dvd player to RGB, even though I thought my TV wasn't compat, seems to have done the trick.
