Question:
I hope that someone can help me with this.
A friend has offered me a Hitachi Laserdisc ( VIP-32C )
But I'm a little confused over the way it works..
He has 50 disc that appear to be in a ridgid plastic sleeve, he said to play the disc the whole thing goes into the player, then you remove the sleeve and it plays... To remove the disc, put the sleeve back in and the disc slides into it.
I'm interested in buying this but I wonder if this will play 'normal' discs ? (such as the StarWars discs). I don't think that these discs have the plastic sleeve, they just appear to be discs ?.
Also does anybody have any intructions or specs for this player ??
Many thanks.:notworthy
I used to have one of these players years and years ago and would not recommend it. If I remember correctly, it required a particular format of disc as you suggest and will not be any good for anything else. May only be of use if any of the 50 discs are worth watching.
No, no, no. Avoid. It is NOT Laserdisc. Around the time that Laserdisc was in its infancy, two other disc formats were briefly made, each totally incompatible with the other (surprise). The other two never took off. This is one of them. It won't play Laserdiscs and other Software is virtually impossible to obtain.
Its a rubbish format and actually uses a naff physical stylus to read discs and each time you watch the film you wear it out a bit more. Even when new the picture wasn't a patch on laserdisc. If its been described to you as a laserdisc player they are trying to rip you off.
Thanks a lot for all your replies..
I was just going to bid on the StarWars box set on ebay...
Luckily you've stopped me in time !
Does anybody know the name of this special format??
Can't seem to find anything on the net....
Again, many thanks, your all bloomin fab

It sounds like it may be a CED Videodisc player. I never owned one but do have one disc Lady Chatterlys Lover, that I bought cheaply for curiosity.:norty:
Has as been said there a hard rigid card case with a record type disc inside.

Tells you everything you don't need to know about this rubbish system.
Quite a few CED discs being put up in the LD section on Ebay. Annoying to see an auction that looks interesting only to realise that it's a CED disc. :oh-hum:
I've got an old Pioneer player and a ton of discs I'll let go very cheaply if you're interested. It became redundant the moment I bought my DVD recorder and transferred my Wile E Coyote LD across (all 14 cartoons on one disc!)
Grandmaster: are you looking to get rid of everything in one shot? If you're prepared to sell off some of the discs separately I may be interested in buying some - would be quite interested in the Wile E Coyote. If so can you mail me a list?
