Question:
I can't say I've tested the temperature before, but since I've moved my stereo about I'm now able to. After running for a while, the top of my STRDB930 amp seems very hot...too hot to keep your hand on it more than a couple of seconds (after I've been kranking it up for a bit ;)). That said, it seems to run for a while with no problems. Anyone else experienced this?
Hi mine runs very hot but not enough to make me take my hand off after a few seconds. Is there plenty of ventilation around the amp. Thet do run pretty hot!!!!
Yup, mine generates a fair amount of heat. Although being on a shelf I can't get my whole hand in there to test the burn theory!
Rather sadly I used to quite like 'testing the temperature' after giving it a good workout.. not quite sure why..
I guess just so long as it isn't wedged in a box or next to an oven it'll be ok.
Cheers,
A.
I wouldn't worry about the heat too much as long as it has plenty of ventilation otherwise it'll go the way of the Dodo, my 930 did unfortunately so the 940 I have now gets plenty of space to breathe & that gets hot when pushed too.
I recently reorganised and have my DVD player on top of the amp....it can still breathe, but maybe I should rethink that idea:)

Not a good idea mate...not only will it prevent your amp from breathing, it will also damage the DVd player...lasers are not to good with to much heat.
thanks for the tip BD
I also have a DB930 under a DVD player but there is a big gap between the two. I am using a hi-fi rack.

But heat rises :D
MY amp is probably not on long enough to get too hot. It will be only on for a length of a film.
If you want to heat, the valve amp next to it has seven valves glowing inside it. A few hours of that and the whole room is hot.
Amps get hot. Loads of ventilation required. My a/v stand has the amp on the bottom shelf which is big enough for the amp with loads of space above it, as intended (the stand is obviously designed for the amp at the bottom). I think the specs say something like a 20cm gap above is required.
I had an amp inside a Sony TV stand once (the kind with a glass front) and it got extremely hot in there, heating the DVD player as well, so it got removed very quick.
At the very excessive least heat will cause your LEDs to fade (I think that's what may have happend on my DB940 as the LEDs are faded on some 'pixels' than on others. I'd take it back to RicherSounds as it's still on it's 3 year warranty, but I can't be bothered and don't want to be without it :D).

That's easily long enough to get hot. Mine gets hot after 10 minutes. It should never get 'too' hot though unless it's got poor ventilation.
My mate had his Sony 735 dvd living on top of his 940 amp and the dvd player soon went tits up, but the amp continues to kick ass. I've recently re-arranged my own rack again to give my amp a bit more breathing space (I had my laserdisc player on top of it - but it wasn't like that for more than a couple of weeks so no damage resulted.) Basically, give your amp as much room as possible and for God's sake don't stack anything directly on top of it.
