Turning off TV causes VCR to stop recording !
Question:

More specificallly, if I'm recording from my Digibox, all is fine, but if I turn off the TV the recording continues but playback shows simply a black screen. My set-up is DVD > Grundig 1500 STB > TV AVI (RGB) and VCR > TV AV2. In effect, I'm looping the DVD player through the STB and my AV2 output is correct (set at AV1.)
TV is Sony 29 " WEGA and VCR is SOny. Recording digital with TV on is fine as is recording terrestrial with TV off.
What gives ?! Thanks in advance.

I've got a Sony amp and DVD player and when I use the remote to turn the amp off it also turns the DVD off. Is it possible that something similar i happening to you.
Try turning the TV off manually to see if this still stops the VCR recording. If it it carrys on recording then it must have something to do with the fequencey of the remote.

if I understand correctly your AV2 gets its signal from AV1 via the TV, so you get no signal when you turn off which is correct. as the TV won't pass a signal thru when switched off, they are not directly linked. I'd put your DVD into av2, and pass your digibox thru the VCR, into AV1, problem solved. I guess you pass terrestrial from Aerial>digibox>VCR> TV which allows you to record terrestrial
