sony vega - what display mode should i watch dvds in??
Question:

help!
there are loads of different display modes on my new sony vega and i have no idea which one should be the one i use to watch dvds.
theres 'zoom', 'smart', '4:3' and a couple of strange ratios.
sometimes i play a dvd and 'smart' mode is used, but i was playing harry potter and the chamber of secrets on friday and it defaulted to 'zoom'.
how do i know which mode i should use for different pictures?
anyone out there who can explain just what 'smart' mode does and why 'zoom' is the default for the HP disc???

Answers:

You should use "Wide" for widescreen sources. Zoom is OK for non-anamorphic, Smart for 4:3 material

Answers:

Wide - anamorphic WS
Zoom - non-anamorphic WS
Smart - I watch all 4:3 tv shows using this
4:3 - never use it personally - bars top and bottom I can live with, but at the sides.. :gag:

Answers:

when i go 'wide' on the dvds i have checked it with, its looked rubbish, is that what happens if you put a non-anamorphic disc in that mode?
why would chamber of secrets defaulted to 'zoom' tho? its an anamorphic disc.

Answers:

i always figured wide artificially streteched stuff, what happens if i view a 1.85:1 movie in wide, does it artificially stretch it???

haven't altered anything.
the dvd disc menus you mean?
some discs default to smart, some default to zoom.
in fact CoS defaults to smart for the menus and zoom for the movie.
i thought 'smart' was like an autodetect type mode so it would automatically display things correctly.

Answers:

No, not the dvds disc menus - the display setup menu in your DVD player itself..
Set it to 16:9 rather than the default 4:3..

Answers:

ooo, interesting, i'll do that when i get back on friday.
