Sony tv's and NTSC
Question:

Thinking of getting a Sony as a replacement for my faulty Philips.......I pressume that I can watch NTSC videos's and dvds with them. Not all specification say you can??

Answers:

Well my basic Widescreen 24" TV from 1998 plays pure NTSC...

Answers:

oh and do they automatically switch aspect ratios, say when watching a 16:9 show and changing channel showing something in 4:3

Answers:

I got no probs playing ntcs dvds and consoles on my Sony tv.
Bought last year (KV28FX65 or something)
You can chose weither to have manual-switching or let the tv do it for you (auto-switching)
It always switches to 16:9 if an anamorphic picture from cable or dvd is present though :)

It took me a while to get used to stretched images (4:3 being shown as 16:9) but I did get used to it. I couldn't have the bards down the side as I have a Rear Projection TV and it would cause screen burn so this forced me to get used to it quickly. Ihave a "Just" mode which is the Panasonic smart stretch and it works very well, the only downside is that I can't use it on High Definition broadcasts (which wont effect you in the UK).

The major problem with Sony's Smart mode is that during things like football games on digital and sky news' scrolling news bars at the bottom of the screen, quite often most if not all of the scores etc can be cut off the screen......

I very rarely use the SMART mode - not at all on 4:3, and only on some 14:9 material where there aren't many straight lines. The stretching is too distracting for me.
The Sony I've got (28ls35) will auto-switch to widescreen mode only if there is a wide indicator flag included in the picture signal or from the scart control pin. It won't go to zoom mode if BBC show a 16:9 ratio programme, but it will if Ch4 show one. I have my DVD player hooked up via an s-video to SCART cable (hooked into AV amp along with LD player) and with that I still get the auto widescreen switching, which I wasn't expecting.
If you want the tv to detect the picture shape and adjust modes automatically then the Sony doesn't do that, but then it means that it doesn't flip between modes at the drop of a hat like some Panasonics seem to do. Personally I'd rather the tv stayed in one mode unless a 16:9 image was detected, which the Sony mostly does (if only BBC would transmit the w/s flag like CH4 does!).

You can press the down button to push the screen up so you cut off more form the top and less/none on the botom.........
leaving you the info bar at the bottom
I do this in 14:9 mode when i watch footy that has been broadcast in 4:3.
This way i get to see it a bit larger and i can still se the clock in the top left hand corner

Bizarre looks on that KV28EW20! It's strange to see the floating centre section and end pillars. How much are you paying for it - I got my LS35 from Comet mainly because they did free Saturday delivery, and at the moment are charging £470 (was £530 when I got mine last Nov).

It's a long story......I've been having problems with my Philips 6506, so that's one of the options available to me on an exchange. I think it sells for £549

Never use the tv remote anyway.....just the control for my amp. Have NTL digital, so other than the terrestrial channels and Sky Movies Widescreen, all channels are 4:3 for the most part and I can't get teletext as such, so no use for the control whatsoever (well, unless I'm listening to the tv using headphones and need to adjust the volume)
