Trivial but important question re: surround speaker position
Question:

Just before I hammer nails into any walls in the lounge to mount a pair of surround speakers, I need to know whether:
A) they should be situated on the rear wall behind the seating area (above & either side) about a foot away?
or
B) on stands either side of the sofa (just above ear level)
What do people advise & why? :help:

I've often wondered but never got around to posting - how about if you've got bi-polars?
I've got the Eltax LR rears which are 'A' shaped, if you see what I mean. Should I have the point of the 'A' aimed across the listener or pointed forwards into the room. I've done quite a few searches on this but never found an answer (or at least one that I've understood!).
Any opinions?

I had a set of di-poles and spent a lot of time researching this. Eventually I did find a definitive answer (no link I'm afraid):
Di-/bi- poles are designed to be mounted to the side of the listening position with their 'point' towards the listening position.
Di/bi- poles produce two 'cones' of sound to either side. The idea behind this approach is that the 'cones' of sound bounce off the front and rear walls before reaching the listener. This produces a very 'diffuse' sound-field in which the dipoles are hard for the listener to locate from sound alone.
Note, however, that in small rooms - where the listening position is close to the rear wall - the di-poles may not work very well on the side walls. This is because the rear wall is so close to one of the speaker drive units that you end up creating a near direct path to the listeners (via the rear wall). In those cases it's recommended that you mount the di-poles on the rear wall well above the listening position.

Thanks Pete
That, at long last, is an answer I can make sense of - much appreciated.

Pete: can you give me some advice on where to put my B&W DM601s? Should I put them on stands either side, slightly above & to the rear of seating position? Or right behind the sofa, either side, on the back wall (1 foot away)?

sgecko, since you're talking 'ordinary' speakers then you should follow the link to the Dolby site given above and have a read.
Basically the official (Dolby) answer for 5.1 is that the rears should be mounted to either side of the listening position a couple of feet above the listeners. For a 6/7.1 system, the extra rears should go behind and above the listener (and if you can't achieve this - I can't - then 6/7.1 is a bit of a bust).
In all of the above, though, remember that what sounds best to you is the best. Room acoustics can play funny tricks that make any 'rule' redundant. Use these tips as a place to start, not a 'must'.

Finally sorted this out- bought some high stands & placed the speakers either side of sofa, slightly to the rear & they're 1 ft above ear level; sound ok. I'm sure they'd sound even better in a different room but alas the lounge came ready built 25 years ago!!
Watched 'Three Kings' again last night (top movie) & felt sad about the civilians in Iraq.... :oh-hum:
