Question:
i'm new to home cinema and need some advice please.

I bought one after reading rave reviews at a number of publications, but have never been happy with it. The sound is very digital flat and not very involving.
looks good though.
I'm also a bit naffed as this cost me £449 a little over 4 months ago.
Looks better than it sounds IMHO.
Very happy with mine :)
Only thing of note is that if you have solid floors (concrete etc) rather than wood, then you may find bass is lacking.
Mate of mine has this situation but still likes the 550, I have wooden floors and the bass is great.
Cheers, Vinny

Yup I have to agree, not been a big fan of the current sony systems in terms of performance (great looks, naff sound). Its worth the money now (as sonys just dropped the price to clear em out the new models are due this month), but IMO the little Pioneer DCS303 sounds better.
What is the new s550 type model ?
I think the new sony systems are decent enough for the price. Although i think the 329 price tag may not inc vat?
Yep £329 incl VAT. You can save another tenner by buying it at Richer Sounds and doing a Price Match - they match and give you £10 as well.
I got one on Sunday - not blown away by the sound but its a good all round system for the cash IMO

Don't buy from techtronics mate - awful record on customer service/satisfaction and they managed to 'lose' a returned dav300 for a friend of mine.
Do a search in the suppliers forum and you'll find all kind of comments to this nature.

If memory serves, the DAVS555. The 880 has been dropped this month (now DAVS888) as as the 400 (now a DAVS30).
HTH?
Cant see any of those anywhere on the web. Are they new designs or just updates ?
Also anywhere know cheaper than £319 for the s550 ?

You won`t see them on most sites as sony or dealers that have stock, want to clear out the new models before advertising new models.
You`ll see them on a few dealers sites, like HCH, avland, etc.
Sony always seem to release new versions in April so as Justin says most retailers are trying to flog off the old versions.
Another very cheap site Unbeatable list new Sony titles however these will not be multiregion.
I am one of the few Techtronics fans on these forums. Went for them as only place that offered Sony DVDs with manual and auto region setting, macrovision disabled, and user prohibitions disabled (so forced subtitles can be removed, and you can forward / skip through forced intros). Most retailers now only offer Sonys as auto region with RCE fix.
However it is a big risk as if you ever have any problems then you only get anywhere with Techronics by suing them / getting in Trading Standards.
If you want good service and not too bothered by above extra features I would go for Richer Sound, as service is excellent, my gfs DVD was replaced for a new one when went faulty rather than repaired and their extended warrantly is superb. Very cheap has buyin value if you upgrade and refund if you never claim.
thanx for the info people  , i'm going to richer sounds at the weekend for the sony DAVS550.
1 last thing - do they play DVD-R disks ok ?
thanx again peeps
The 550 should play all mate my 500 plays everything apart from svcd. :)
My DAVS-550 plays both DVD-R and DVD-RW disks without a problem. It also plays svcd burnt on CD-R disks.
if u want to buy a 550 i wud stop ad consider the slightly older modle the dab400 its far superior, i got a 550 system and wasnt happy so returned it and got 400, the sound and genreally everything is better, also the price is a bit more healthy at some place in uk can be 279 quid

Huh? The DAVS400 is actually newer then the DAVS550! Its the model BELOW the 550, and replaced the DAVS300.
Don`t know how you can say the DAVS400 is better quality then the DVAS550! The DAVS400 doesn`t even have a s-video out, let alone component / prog scan! You`re stuck to composite only on the 400, and the amps not as good either. Best avoided at any price (and they are now discontinued and replaced by the much better DAVSA30 with RGB out via scart!).
I`m no fan of the current sony systems for sound quality compared to the Pioneers and panasonics, but theres no way they can be said that the quality of the 550 is worse then the 400! Especially considering the current price reposition of the 550 to clear them out...
if you had a DAVS550 and returned it for a DAVS400, then you must be off your trolley.... :D

Yup, the main problem with SVCD playback is what you mastered them with and discs used, 99% of CD-R/RW based SVCDs could play...
ok cheers for that m8. I think lightyear meant the davs 500 not 550 the 400 came after the 500 and has a higher output 300w compared to the 500 which has 280w.
yes sorry i did mean 500 lol, sorry, still i have seen 550 and read reviews on 550 and arnt very impressed, my dad owns a pioneer systems wht whips the arse of it (well i think)

Yup no probs you did have me worried me though you had cotton buds in your ears or something;) As per earlier posts, I don`t think much of the current sonys for sound quality compared to the others (pioneer, etc) but for what they do for the current dosh, the are ok for the money:)
Still a bit supprised that you feel the 400 is an imporvement on the 500 ( the 550 replaced the 500, the 400 replaced the 300). Main reason I say this is due tot he lack of S-video out (irrelivent I guess if you didn`t use this before)?
Still, as long as you`re happy thats all that matters:)
i was looking for a cheap system with good performance at the time for my money, i have no need for a s-video or any of that stuff, i simply want to watch dvds in surround sound lol
Yes justin i have fancied a pioneer system for a while may get one and sell the sony eventually. The 400 really ****** me off having no svideo should have checked obviously but did not think would only have composite. Also fancy multi region now had an old pacific multi but sold it.
i went to richersounds 2day for the sony 550 but they had just got the new panasonic SC DT100 instock. :norty:
i played with them both and WOW the panasonic kicked the sonys butt on everything . it looks classy ( breaking the mould being in two separating micro sized boxes) and delivered excellent sound.
both are multi region and only £349
i came home with the panasonic SC DT100

Yeah I was well supprised when we had oir first delivery of DAVS400s, and there was no s-vid out, so stopped stocking them after that in favour of the Pioneer DCS303.
At least sony seem to have learnt their lesson, the new models all have scarts (with RGB out) on by the looks of it this year
