Question:
After purchasing a Linn Centrik ( Centre Speaker ) from Richer Sounds at the weekend,as posted on The Bargain Forum, I am now in need of a new TV Stand. Unfortunately the TV in question is the forum-favourite 43" Tosh Rear Projector which is currently sitting on it's own stand.
I was thinking of building a Flexy style solution, threaded rods and MDF, about 40cm high, 120cm wide and 50cm deep, using either 18 or 25mm MDF. Five legs ( one at each corner and one in the middle of the back ) and a half leg from the underside of the middle shelf to the floor. The idea of this approach is that the Centrik would be clamped ( by the stand itself ) between the top and middle shelves and take the place of a middle leg at the front ( it can support 60kg ). Below this there would be another shelf with my OnDigital box and video, either side of the half-height centre leg ( that supports the middle shelf ).
Has anyone else built something like this? The TV weighs just over 50kg so I was going to use 18mm MDF and maybe double up the top shelf - either that or 25mm and don't double up the top shelf?
Any advice before I start ordering hardware?
Cheers
Simon
I built a flexy a couple of years ago for my 75kg Sony TV and it's been fine..
It's roughly the same dimensions as your proposal..
3/4" studs - one at each corner.
3x shelves of 18mm MDF - laminated two sheets together for the top one.
You shouldn't need to bother with any middle legs..
I built myself one last year, my TV weighs about 40Kg and my centre speaker about 17Kg. I used 18mm threaded rods and 25mm MDF bought from my local Jewson.
I'm rather pleased with it if if I say so myself ;)

Let me know how you fair :)
I've got the same TV as you, and I've never yet worked out where to put the centre...
Presently, it tops my tv totem (AMP + Player side by side, then TV on top, then centre just below the clouds)

Nice set of Revolutions there, Mundos..
I like them. :D
I've just bought myself the R1 rears to replace the old Tannoy 628s that I'm using at the moment so that should be a big improvement when they get here.
By the way, I used your idea of filling the base of the R2s with bird grit, worked a treat and only cost me a fiver, so thanks for that. :notworthy:
Was looking for ideas to do something like this myself, need something to put my TV and centre channel on.
Don't suppose you've got any close-ups mundos do you, still not 100% sure about how it will look.
I can take some more pictures and mail them to you, what do you want close ups of?
That would be great, would you?

Flexy-TV/Video stand constructed at the weekend and looks a treat. Followed Bapapapa's advice and simplified my design to the following:
2 x 1m M20 studs for legs ( cut in half to make four )
24 x M20 nuts, steel washers and nylon washers
4 x 4'x2' pieces of 18mm MDF
1 x 4'x2' piece of 6mm MDF
Shelves for the video/Ondigital box and centre speaker were 18mm MDF. The top shelf for the TV is made out of 2 pieces of 18mm MDF ( not glued yet ) and the 6mm piece on top. I cut out holes in the 6mm sheet for the TV's feet ( about 2" diameter ) so that once it's atop the Flexy it's not possible to slide the TV off the stand. The result is a stand that can support me in the middle of the top shelf - so a TV's no problem. I've left the legs at 50cm although as the top shelf is at about 40cm, there is some excess rod - a tidier minded soul might cut these bits off but I haven't yet ( and therefore probably won't ). The stand does increase the height of the TV slightly although the shelves could all be lowered if necessary. Aesthetically it's a beaut, sitting nicely alongside my original Flexy-HiFi rack, also in unfinished MDF....
Total cost was £42 which could have been reduced slightly by using thinner legs and less washers - I went for these to match my existing Flexy.
I'd certainly recommend this approach to anyone with the 43" Tosh and a centre speaker...
Cheers

Dont these shelves look a bit crap what with the threaded bar showing? . Sound more like racking for a garage.
Wouldnt the threaded bar look better sleeved in either chromed bar (like what you can use for wardrobe rails) or painted/sprayed plastic tubeing?.
I'm quite happy with the way mine looks, the problem with using some kind of sleeve over the threaded rods is that you wouldn't be able to get to the nuts to tighten them when you put the rack together.
You're right . I never thought about that !
