Umax / Yamada 2100: What's it like?
Question:

Am on the verge of buying this this afternoon, and I know a load of yuo grabbed one on the bargain forums a while back when ebuyer were doing it with the 5.1 speakers.
What's it like? What's the build quality?
I believe it plays everything - anybody had any problems so far with disks?
I'd appreciate your comments
Thanks

I bought the Naiko equivalent from Safeway. Its identical apart from not having the inbuilt DD decoder.
It has played everything i have tried including:
CDR
CDRW
DVD-R (many different brands all without problems)
MP3 on CDR and CDRW
VCD
SVCD
JPEGs burnt to CDR and CDRW (simply burnt as a file on the disc)
Kodak photo CD
Oh - it even plays DVDs :D ( regions 1,2 and 0 tried).
The player looks and feels well built (no rough edges or shoddy key printing). It sends the widescreen autoswitch signal if you set your TV as a 16:9 one (some cheapies don't do this).
Too be picky (and this is only nitpicking - even expensive players are rarely perfect):
The black on DVD picture is slightly bright - so is more like dark grey than black. Other than this a can't fault picture or sound quality.
I have had the odd DVD have subtitles on by default (even though they are switched off in the options). I have has this occasionally on other players too. You simply turn them off on the remote.
I have had no other problems or niggles.
Its a very good budget player..

E-buyer are out of stock with this player but are awaiting delivery!
I know there is a huge thread complaining about about dts sound playback but that wont affect my dolby pro logic !!
Does this dvd player literally play everything with no problem?
Does it play the following 100%:
DVD - multiregion
DVD-R
VCD
SVCD
MP3
cheers peeps.........

Answers:

Yep
It plays al those formats without any problems , hacks or fiddles .
The problems were with a batch that ebuyer had , that had faulty inbuilt decoders that caused popping. Umax swapped the players for non-faulty ones. Some people said the inbuilt decoder didn't do DTS , but then it never claimed it did ( like most players with an inbuilt decoder it doesn't decode DTS - just dolby digital and pro-logic). The signal is there through the optical/coax digital outputs for DTS via an external decoder the same as other players though.
There is a post in the bargain forum saying that playstationmods currently have them is stock for under £50.

Cheers,
I have ordered one from ebuyer but they are awaiting new stock. Do you believe that the new stock will have DTS with no popping?

The Pioneer will have slighly better picture quality, but will play fewer formats (and make sure you buy one already multiregion modified). You also don't get an inbuilt dolby digital decoder on the Pioneer.
So it depends on what formats you are likely to play, and how much you want to spend.
If you have a large widescreen TV 32" or above and are unlikely to need to play formats such as JPEGs on CDR/CDRW , MP3 on DVD-R etc , then go for the better picture quality of the Pioneer.

well ive recieved my Yamada player from ebuyer this week and am very impressed with it!
my pros:
*Plays all formats ive tried with no mprobs
- DVD (ALL REGIONS)
- DVD-R
- DVD-RW
- VCD
- SVCD
- MP3 DISCS
- JPEG DISCS
*Picture quality is truly excelent - much better than i thought it would be !! I have 2 other dvd players (branded) and i would say this compares equally
* It was multi region out of the box
my cons
* this is a large player but then again build quality for the unit is very good
* The caddy doesnt have the sleakest of movements but only a minor con
--- Conclusion ---
Overall for £50 this is spot on - picyure and sound compete with top players such as pioneer and sony
The drive plays everything ive thrown in it - even a disc that was so scratched my pc had difficulty.
Build is good but the player is not a work of art.
I give 9/10 - get one while stocks last !!
