Question:
I have just moved to the US, and have bought a 50" DLP Samsung TV. I was looking around at DVD Players, and found the Pioneer DV656A, which looked ideal, but I then found that while in the UK TVs are generally PAL / NTSC compatible, US TVs are only NTSC, meaning I have problems for the 50 or so UK DVDs i have brought over here.
I looked around, and found that Sampo and Daewoo seemed to be the best around for converting PAL into NTSC based on reviews (multi-region players i could find such as the 656A would play any region, but would only play PAL as PAL, so this wouldnt work on my TV). So I bought the top Daewoo model, the 5800, and whilst its fine for the playback of NTSC DVDs, and ok for non anamorphic PAL disks, with Anamorphic disks, the picture is squashed so badly (i know this is to be expected when converting, but not this much), and makes it hard to watch anything anamorphic. I might as well stretch the picture from 4:3, so this is going back, but I wanna know what the best thing for me to do would be?
Are there any branded (Pioneer etc) DVD players on sale in the UK which have been modded to convert PAL - NTSC, or come that way? I have a voltage switcher, so I dont mind buying from the UK, but I need a good picture. The good quality video convertors I have seen cost a fortune, so any ideas?
Thanks
(P.S. Sorry if that was a bit long)
Buy a Pal TV, or use a Projector with a HTPC. There was a thread along similarlines to this a while ago, and that was the general conclusion. Or you could swap the DVD's for R1

Sell PAL kit in the US. They also do standards conversion.
Go to www.hkflix.com and buy a Malata player. This is what I have here and it does a superb job of converting the PAL to NTSC on my 47" Panny TV. Its Progressive Scan and has a build-in DD Decoder (if you need this). Also the customer service I got from them was superb.
None of the UK deck's convert this way (hence why I left my old Pioneer 717 in the UK) and the cheap Samoo's etc are ok but not quite as good as the Malata which has lots of tweaking options (e.g X-Y Scaling) and is true worldwide (supports most PAL signals and is multi-voltage).
If you can find a Sampo DVE-631CF, they are excellent for the money and should be about $100.
