Help Needed - Denon 3802 On Screen Display
Question:

I am currently unable to get the On Screen Display of a Denon 3802 to work with a Panasonic TX-28DK1 television. Can anyone with this receiver help with advice re which connections to use ?

Use a video cable from the monitor output on the back of the amp to the video conector on the tv.
I am sure there is a thread about this already I will do a search for you.
Here it is thread

Hello hnimmo
I have a Denon 3802 and you have to connect it through the S-Video connection. Use the Moniter out s-video connection, ( the bottom one right hand corner of the Left side Pannel ). Stick the other end in the s-video on the telly and then choose the correct input. The S-Video is a round plug with pins on the inside.
Press the Setup, Display or Menu buttons on the remote making sure it shows AMP on the display. Follow it through and you are away.
Get a cheap s-video lead from B&Q or Homebase as the picture is only black and white anyway.
Good Luck

Not sure I would recommend a cheap video cable on such a nice amp but still....

I set up the receiver for the first time just over a year ago and only used the cable to allow me to make use of the on screen display on the television and then removed it. I was unable to find it today and purchased a cheap coaxial cable ( phono to phono plugs ) which I cannot get to work. From what you are saying, I need to purchase a cable with S-Video connections at each end and use the appropriate S-Video connections on the amp/television. Is this correct ?
Thanks for all your help.

I have an A1 SR amp which you can use either S video or normal video connectors. Isn't it the same with the 3802?
S video should get you a better picture though.
Are you sure that the cable you bought is ok? (Particularly as its a cheapy)

The above piece of advice solved the problem. I had assumed that, after making the connection, all I needed to do to bring up the on screen display function was press the set up button on the receiver's remote control. Not so. However, as soon as I choose the correct input ( i.e. selected the TV/AV button on my television remote ) up popped the on screen display function.
Out of curiosity, what volume level setting do you normally use ? I am using the receiver to power a set of Kef KHT2005 speakers in a room measuring approximately 16' x 12' and find that I normally need to set same somewhere in the region of -8/-10 to obtain levels that I considerable acceptable.
Many thanks for your help in solving my problem.

Problem solved. See my previous entry for where I was going wrong. It would appear that the 3802 is similar to the A1 SR in that you can use either the S-Video or the normal ( phono ) video connectors.
I only use the cable when I need to access the on screen display set up functions so I am not too bothered about the picture quality.
Your help was much appreciated.

ljp, I was only suggesting this as a way of getting the Denon's on screen display onto the TV. I use the same system. My DVD player is connected by a QED Squart to the TV for a better picture and no video switching by the AMP. I would think that switching by the amp would degrade the picture and require even more cables. My Sky box is also direct into the TV by a scart lead though a little cheaper.;)

I have a kef system but not the "eggs". A pair of Kef Q5 floorstanders for fronts, a Q9c, 2 Q1's for surround and 2 Q8s for the center rears, and a Rel Q150e sub. My levels are around -40db for normal TV viewing. For DVD's it goes up to -30db as an average. The film "The Others" has to go to -15db as its such a quiet soundtrack. For CD replay -25 ish just played througn the main pair in stereo. My house is not detached so a volume of -8/-10 at night would keep the neighbours awake and listening to the complete film without the pictures.
One day I will have to be in the neigbours house with my volume up to get a idea of what its like.

Just read my post it maybe seemed like I was having a go - it wasn't intented like that!
I dont run my dvd video signal through my amp cuz I hate having to use the tv remote to alter the channel etc all the time but because Denon dont make amps with a decent setup routines I too have to use the tv to set my amp up (If anyone from Denon's reading this try borrowing a TAG system and look how user friendly their kit is to setup!) so maybe a cheaper cable is the best way to go (I don't mind I didn't have to pay for my cable ;) )

Like yourself, I only use the cable to get the Denon's on screen display onto the television. I really like the Kef Eggs but they appear to be somewhat inefficient and really need a fair amount of power to drive them to realistic sound levels. I was a bit worried about using such a high setting on the receiver ( -8/-10 ) so I am quite relieved to read that ljp listens to films in the -2 to -10 range.
ljp
I use the system solely for films as I have a separate music system ( Denon 1550;Cyrus 3/PSX; Mission 752's ) so I am quite pleased to see that you listen in the -2 to -10 range. From my point of view, a reading of -8 seemed rather high for a volume setting which goes from -70 to +15.
Thanks again to both of you for your help.
