TV/FM Aerial problem
Question:

Hi,
I've just had bought my first receiver and surround system. I'm very pleased with it, but I have a problem with FM/TV reception.
I've connected the FM aerial (loft) and the TV aerial (roof) to the same coax lead coming down to a single coax socket downstairs.
If I take a coax lead to the TV from the coax socket, the picture is fine and teletext works fine, but as soon as I put a splitter (straightforward Y shape connector) on the socket so that I can feed the TV and the receiver (for FM), teletext stops working properly (incomplete text). It doesn't seem to matter whether I plug the receiver coax into the splitter or not, as soon as introduce the splitter between the wall socket and the TV, text goes pants.
Any ideas what might be going wrong? Am I being naive to expect to run both signals (FM & TV) down the same piece of coax?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Arthur

You can do it, but you need to use a frequency splitter - you see these as socket faceplates with FM/TV sockets. This splits the two 'bands' to suit......

A booster near the aerial might help. Y-splitters are available which are 'proper' splitter/combiners (one at each end does it, AFAIK). Too late for two downleads ?

Thanks Mike and Andy,
Two downleads only as a last resort!
I've been out and got a 'proper' combiner and 'proper' splitter as you suggested. I'll give it a try tonight.

The term to look for is 'diplexer' they come either as Y connectors or socket plates.
Beware some socket plates with TV and FM sockets don't contain the diplexer and expect you to connect two downleads!
You may need a signal booster anyway as splitting the signal in without amplication will weaken the signal.
http://www.maxview.ltd.uk/ has a list of retail products and some PDF literature that may help you.

Thanks Andy,
I believe I got diplexer splitters/combiners (and they were maxview), but I'll need to check as the price of the wall socket was suspiciously cheap (£1.99), whereas the splitter was about £4.
I'll see how it goes this evening, but I'll check that the socket is diplexer before I open the packet.

I installed the diplexer fittings last night and it works a treat.
