Question:
Thinking of getting one *edit - the Sony* (probably from here (http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/1210))
Anyone got an opinion on this machine?
I've got a DVPNS700 at the moment, which I'm generally happy with (although the layer change could be quicker), but would quite like something that will play mp3 disks.
*edit*
Hmm, actually, this (http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/1193) looks like a nice machine as well.
Any opinions on that one?
Go with the Pioneer for one it has DVD-Audio over the Sony and you've seen the recommendations. I've got the 747 which is basically thr same model but with a better chassis and audio outputs and I can't fault it.
i own a sony 900 an after owning a pioneer 626 an seeing my mates 737 the sony kills the pioneer for build quality i also prefer the picture on mine to the pioneer but thats a personnal choice.also my mate has a few problem dvds like jay n silent bob an jeepers creepers which both play fine on my player, jay n silent however wouldnt play on my old pioneer 626 but jeepers would.i would get a demo if i was you mate before you buy bot are highly recommended an im sure you would be happy with either.but like i said build quality IMHO is a lot better on sony`s
Hmm, 1 vote for each.
I must admit I'm more tempted by the Sony as, having used their stuff before, I know it's up to a fairly high standard whereas Pioneer are a bit of an unknown to me.
Think I'll sleep on this one.
I've currently got the Sony on loan.. nice bit of kit.
the pioneer has got both dvd-audio and sacd, just sacd on the sony.
one useful point, since you mention MP3s.. the Sony interface is really excellent for this, long filenames, browsing whilst tracks are playing.. about the best I've seen on a DVD player so far for this.
the Pioneer was what hifi player of the year I think though.
I have the Sony DVP-NS905 & it's the dogs danglies for both picture & build quality. I suppose you would have to go with the Pioneer if you wanted DVD Audio but I didn't & am very happy with my purchase :)
Hated the sony 700s picture and scrapped it after 3 months, bought the pioneer 656a and it is a cracking machine.
I've taken the plunge and ordered the Sony.
I'm not too bothered about DVD-A (or SACD for that matter) as I've got 300+ CD's that I have no intention of replacing.
i have the Sony 905 and it is an absolutely fantastic player!
its the mutts nuts!
Another vote for the Sony NS900.
I have had it for 6 months or so and also use it for CD/SACD playback. The CD playback using the internal DAC's is better than a £500 TEAC CD player I used to have (the Sony replaced it).
The DVD playback is also better than the previous Sony 525D player had, and that wasn't a bad player either.
This is actually the same question I've had banging around in my skull for the last few days...
It's time for me to replace my Marantz which has fantastic cd audio playback.
However one of the main reasons it's going is due to dvdr incompatibility. It'll play some copies and won't play others.
I like to back up my sons dvd's as he is a grubby finger print leaving 3 yr old.
I'd prefer to get the Sony, but I know they have the reputation for being picky about what they play...Can anyone verify if they play dvdr's?
Thanks...
Well, the specs claim that it can play DVDR/DVDRW, but I haven't got mine yet so I can't confirm that.

I haven't tried (no DVD-R's to try), but the Sony is supposed to play them according to the manua,l and the DVD-R on the box..

Yes the DVP-NS905 does. Tried Vanilla Sky & Shrek DVD-R's on mine & they played fine (legal backups BTW as I own them :) )

Cheers for that Listy, I may order one now...
By the way avland have it for £20 cheaper delivered...

Ignore every thing I've written above...I've gone for the Sony DVP-NS900V instead.
I couldn't find enough evidence that the 905 was a lot better than the 900 and I decided to save some money.
I've picked it up for £250 MR with 3 yrs Warranty chucked in.
I'll pick it up tonight.
Thanks for all your help.

I have the 900V and apart from the ability to play MP3's on the 905 (something I didn't expect Sony to do), I think the 900 is better than the 905.
I prefer the build quality off the 900 and I have heard that the insides are not quite as good on the 905 compared to the 900.
I think the 905 maybe a better DVD player to the 900 (only just though), its something to do with 12 bit v 10 bit video processors.
The 900 is better in my opinion if you plan to use it for audio.
Having owned both (and currently I have two 905's one won as a prize) I would say that the picture on the 905 is better than the 900 (and every other player I've owned) but the 900 had slightly better CD replay.
Got my 900 last night at the bargainous price of £250. Multi-region with 3 yrs warranty chucked in.
It's a lovely beast and looks great. Played my sons copied films, so I can put away the precious disney originals.
Picture is far better than my 4100 which to all intents and purposes was a cheapo Philips that sounded good.
Sound is great too. I was agonizing over whether to go for the newer slightly higher specced 905 or the weighty old skool 900.
Prefer the remote on the 900, it's quirky and doesn't look like all of my other Sony remotes.
I think if I'd have gone for the 905 I'd have been disappointed by the looks even if the quality is slightly better.
I mean this (http://www.avland.co.uk/sony/dvpns900/dvpns900sillrg.jpg) versus this (http://www.avland.co.uk/sony/dvpns905/dvpns905lrg.jpg) . I like my separates large.

Richer Sounds!
I think they advertised it at some point, not sure... I only found out by accident whilst reading avforums...
£200 for R2 or £250 MR. Pretty sure the MR is the remote signal hack...
A few days down the line and I love it even more...
DVP-NS905 came this morning - haven't had a chance to give it a full workout (working nights, so need some sleep), but I gave it a quick check with R1 & R2 DVD's, VCD and MP3s - all seem to work fine.
Anyone got an opinion on this machine?
