Question:
Hi guys,
I'm about to upgrade my 3+ year old Toshiba SD2109e. I have been very pleased with its performance in the past and it is still going strong. My only real gripes are that it doesn't play recorded media (CDR, CDRW's etc.) and is quite noticeable when changing layers with most movies.
With software having been upgraded in the last 3 years, I was wondering what the layer change was like on the Tosh. SD220.
Surely they have started using buffering techniques (as used on PC software) to eliminate any sign of a layer change ?
I have had a look through this forum, and whilst there are many threads regarding the quality of the SD220, I couldn't find anything indepth about the layer change.
I own a TOSH 220...what is a layer change?;)
v v v minimal disruption in the viewing with the layer change
I had the Toshiba 210e,and now have a 220.The 220 twenty is so much better, picture, sound, looks.
I still have an SD2109 and have now got an SD220 as well.
I think the layer change has improved but it's still noticeable - much more so than on the Pioneer DV350 which I had for a while. However, that was so fussy playing DVDs (I had loads which had problems despite looking perfect) that I sent it back to Amazon to swap for the Toshiba. I'm perfectly happy to put up with the brief layer change pause because the Tosh seems to be happy with all my DVDs.
i upgraded my toshiba 3107 to a 220 in november, and I can honestly say i havent seen a layer change yet.
I still haven't seen a player that has an unnoticable layer change. Even my Tosh SD900 pauses a bit too long for my liking.
Have to admit I cant remember the last time I noticed a layer change on my 220, whether of course my brain automatically ignores them now or the player handles them well is open to argument :p
This is a bit unrelated, but do any of you know if a chipped Tosh 220e from Richer Sounds will play RCE discs?
Not sure - mine was chipped from web-electricals and plays RCE's with no problems.
A chipped 220e from Richer Sounds will play all region discs, including RCE.
Cheers
just out of interest. of those of you who have the tosh 220e, have you experienced any probs with an in-between flickering frame? I've posted on another thread, but since there are so many of you who own a tosh, thought I might post here too. :p
edit: oh yeah, i don't notice anything about the layer change.
The only flickering probelms I've noticed is when playing region 1 dvds (the bottom left hand corner of the screen flickers quite a bit) - region 2's are fine and not aware of any other flickering.
i've had a multi region 220 from amazon for a while now and out of about 50-60 dics viewed i've literally had three noticeable layer changes.. funnily enough they've all been R1 discs, two from fox and one from mgm. every other region disc i've played has been unnoticeable... the only reason i remember the discs is because i get so used to not noticing them that it bugs the hell out of me when i get one! don't have any RCE discs that i'm aware of and never really caught any flickering.
i guess i'd better take back my tosh then and get it replaced.
i'd rather have a noticeable layer change than an irritating flicker.
