TV size vs Room size... HELP ME PLEASE!
Question:

Got a problem;
I am looking at a 42" plasma TV mounted on a desktop stand and positioned on a glass unit which measures 42" (107cm) wide by 16" (40cm) deep (front to back).
My living room is 16m2, and the plasma would be angled in a corner.
Upon measuring the said TV and the position it will sit, I am happy it fits and won't be oversized etc. However, when I go to actually buy it (which I have done this afternoon and on two other occaisions this week!), I walk away with the impression; "...no, no, it's way too big!"
So - how big is yours and how big is your room? And indeed, do you think a 42" plasma is too big for my 16m2???

Answers:

I hae a 47" WS Set and my room size is about 15' x 22' and it is across the 15' with the sofa off the back wall to allow the center rear speaker for 6.1 to sit!
You room sounds big enough, get the TV, you know you want to ;)

Answers:

what would be the viewing distance from the screen?
i have a 32" widescreen panasonic and it's about 3M from the sofa, and i would be more than happy to get a 42" plasma (which would take it a far bit further back)

Answers:

Oh... I definately want it! :)
Viewing distance? Well, with said TV angled in a corner, and two sofas on the opposite two walls (y'all with me?)... probably the furthest viewing distance would be 3m and the shortest about 1.5m...
Kryten; your room does sound a lot bigger (approx 30m2); mine is virtually square aside of a bay window, whereas yours is no doubt rectangular...

Answers:

At 3m this would be fine. I think my 47" is about that, and being plasma you can get closer than RP.

That's the kind of answer I like!

Yeah it is, but due to window and door positioning I view TV accross the narrow width of the room. I'll post pictures if I ever get a digi camera!
But I have my sofa about 2' off the wall and then the RPTV is sat about 2' off and is about 2' deep so that gives a viewing distance of about 10' at best for a 47" TV.

Answers:

I have a 61" RPTV and the couch is 8ft 4" away from it.
Turn out all the lights and it is like being at the cinema :D
Picture looks fine (especially with DVD)

The screen can never be too big:D.

I got tha Panny Projector in my bedroom\film room with a 7ft screen, my rooms about 5 x 3 meters in size, you really can'nt have a screen big enough IMO, but i'd probably say mines a big over kill for the size of the room, but the pictures great and everyone else loves watching films round mine now ;) Rizel

My living room is about 16' square and I have a projector onto the chimney breast giving me a screen roughly 7 foot diagonal - it's great

But if you have a pull down screen it will take less room than a Plasma! If it was me hing & then a projector & screen for Films, Footy, Boxing ect.
Image is fanstastic with projectors.
So you could buy:

Plus a pull down screen (or smaller size):

& then a nice Panasonic Flat Screen 32" WS TV all in for around 2,000 pounds! Much better vaule i think than a Plasma IMO. Rizel

General equation is as follows
Screen height * 6 = rough viewing distance.
Therefore 25" (4*3) = 32" (WS) = 14" high screen = approx 7' from screen
Obviously only an approximation and don't forget that 2.35 films will have black bars.
Even more general rule.
It it fits through the door then its not too big:p

Hardware forum?

Answers:

to work it out roughly- for home cinema you need a min of 4x the distance from the TV in feet. E.G. for a 7' distance you require a 28" tv.

NB only works for 4:3 TVs. See above

Is there any rule of thumb for a 16:9 then?
