Question:
Most of you will recall the thread last week about how you dont get manuals with Toshiba 220E from Richer Sounds. i havent been back to Richer yet to complain but I think I've discovered the reason. Looking at the mains plug, it is a European style plug fitted into a UK plug adaptor. Obviously Richer have been getting them cheap from France or somewhere, with manuals all in foreign languages...
Why not email Julian and ask him ?
I read recently they get em from Germany....I am going to write a letter to Mr. Richer and try and get vouchers :)
Hows your Thor BTW?
Thor arrived today! Tested it out with my "The Office" DVD and colours seem a lot fuller and more natural. Edges have tidied up a bit but there's still the odd raggedy one here and there.
Does this mean that RS are selling grey imports?
Richer Sounds - box shifters extraordinaire. Yet another dissatisfied customer. One day people will learn that cheapest is a long way from best and Richer Sounds will be no more. Roll on that day.

Because you did not get a manual?
I have bought loads of stuff from various branches of Richer Sounds including a Toshiba SD 220. all items had manuals. All items have worked perfectly and in all cases the Richer Sounds staff have all been helpful. Try buying for other retailers such as Comet if you want crap service. as far as the import situation is concerned, virtually all top brand names such as Toshiba and Pioneer are manufactured in China or similiar, so who gives a damn whether they are imported finally from France or Germany as long as the product performs properly and is repaired if necessary adequately
Well I agree, Richer Sounds arent that bad. Certainly I'd rather buy from Richer than the likes of Dixons and Comet. But I do object to not getting a proper manual.
You are absolutley right about the manual Deadly Green. When a friend of mine purchased a 220 from Richer a few months ago some there was no manual in the box. He asked for one and was given one straight away fom a pile of manuals next to the till. Recently the manuals seem to be in the boxes most of the time.
OK thanks rocky I'll pop in tomorrow.
Go my Mum a Tosh 120 from amazon. The manual is clearly a a printed pdf style document and manually stapled.
Richers are fine as lone as you are aware what you are getting. If you are ok with grey imports, graded and discontinued then you can get decent stuff cheep.

Yes.They are open about this.Look at their website or mag.
From the RS website
INTERNATIONAL PURCHASING? In order to offer you, the consumer, the lowest prices day in and day out, we sometimes choose to buy from elsewhere in Europe where some of the best deals can often be had. Buying from outside the UK also enables us to help fulfil the huge demand we have for certain lines on the occasions when UK distributors just don't have enough stock to go round. Being a member of the EU, this type of parallel buying is completely within the law (in fact, in the interests of the consumer, encouraged).
Hi,
I spoke to the RS helpdesk using number on the web site.
Guy said that some Tosh SD220's shipped without manuals. He took my name and address and promised me one in the post free of charge (obviously!).
Will let you know if it arrives!
RS have always been great to me. Terrible for auditioning stuff but as box shifters they are fantastic.
Cheers, Chris.

Cheers, Chris. Sounds like helpdesk lies/rubbish to me. Why would Toshiba ship a player without a manual? Makes no sense at all.
Well it was mutltiregion so maybe it had to be opened to modify b4 being re-sealed and sold?
Just a thought....

Just a thought.... Possible but then (if it was a mistake in that someone forgot to put it back) why would so many have been affected? Also RS knew about it as someone said that they had a pile of manuals behind the counter.
Is there any manuals for downloading on the Toshiba web site? Most decent manufacturers pop PDF versions of the manuals online for downloading.
I'm pretty sure my old Samsung 709 DVD player came with a nice French manual in the box when I bought it from RS
...anyway, manuals are for losers - real men press all the buttons until they either find what they want or they break the thing ;)
I bought my multi-region Tosh SD220 from webelectricals about two months ago.
It works like a dream (I wanted to get one from Richer Sounds but my local shop was sold out). Mine came in a box with German writing on together with an instruction manual that was printed in German and French (no English version). This look liked an "official" manual. However, it also came with a an English manual - this looked like a photocopy. I assume the suppliers are getting the kit from abroad and them shipping them to the UK where they are chipped to be multiregion and are just putting copies of the English manual in the boxes when they are sold.
Does anyone know why companies like Richer Sounds are having to import them? Do the UK ones really cost them much more? If so WHY??? It's an absolute p!ss-take imho.
I think you hit the nail on the head Deadly Green. We are once again being taken to the cleaners. Why do us brit put up with it? and some even encourage it by saying don't buy these gray imports!! why the hell not? We are european after all. So... they are not imports they simply come from a different region of our community.
I remember when I was buying my separates system over the summer. The guy in Practical hifi was moaning when I tried to get him to pricematch Richersounds because he said all of their stuff is grey imports. Now personally if they had summit I wanted to buy I certainly wouldn't care that it has been imported if the price is right. But to be honest I do not think that their selection is anywhere near as good as other retailers.
But if you want good selection, you will pay a premium for that... Richer Sounds offer a service to a certain market and they get what they can get. A big  from me for Richer Sounds
What do the manufacturers say about grey imports? If they don;t care then neither should we.
