Transport noise on Toshiba 220E
Question:

I have noticed the transport makes quite a bit of noise when a disc is spinning. Is this normal? I'm used to CD players which are pretty much silent and the Toshiba makes a very noticable noise, I can hear it quite clearly from my viewing position.

Answers:

eh, do all DVD players make a bit of noise then?

I had one of those players briefly - Amazon sent me a R2 version instead of the M/R one I ordered.
Anyway like any other Toshiba I have had yes you will hear some whirring whilst searching menus etc. However when playing an actual DVD film it should be silent.
Must say I did notice with the 220E (I currently have the 210E) that whirring was evident when listening to audio CD's - not something I normally do as I have a dedicated player.
I think most players will to some extent emit a little noise especially when searching menus as mentioned but IMO it definately should not be audible when playing DVD video.
Wharfedale was one player I had which drove me round the bend with the noise it made - almost constantly! :oh-hum:
I found a Pioneer DV350 (same price as Tosh 220) to be slightly quieter and believe that it has a dual focus laser which is supposed to help whereas the Tosh's is single - (daughter has one)
Both excellent players mind you

I've got the DV-454 and I've never heard it make a noise.

And I had the Pioneer DV-350 and I never heard that make a noise either. Unfortunately it also stuttered over several DVDs so I sent it back to amazon and got the Toshiba 220 - no regrets! It's played everything I've thrown at it and I've never noticed any noise whilst playing a movie. I can live with a slight whirring noise when loading menus etc.
