Question:
We have a Hitachi 28" widescreen TV (approx 3 - 4 years old) and it keeps switching itself on to stand - by and then back on again.
Has anyone got any ideas why it does this?
Someone sitting on the remote by any chane?!!! :D

Actually, the first few times it happened we thought that.
Is your remote set to the right setting? Some Hitachi remotes can control VCR and TV and if they get set to the wrong setting (usually by a switch on the remote) this can cause odd behaviour. I've experienced this myself with a former TV (a 4/5 year old Hitachi TV)
Alternatively you could remove the batteries from the remote to check if the problem is due to the TV or the remote.
Bad news if it not still under warranty - I had the same problem with my 24" Hitachi and if I remember rightly the tube had to be replaced.
