Help needed choosing a DVD player and supplier.
Question:

I'm looking to buy a second DVD player and would like it to be multiregion and have a built in DD5.1 / DTS decoder.
Any ideas what supplier to use and what DVD players are recommended please?
I have looked at www.multiregionmagic.co.uk. and www.richersounds.com. Are they reputable?
Thanks. :)

Toshiba SD220e - £119.99 - have a look here
Pioneer DV350 - £115 - have a look here
Pioneer DV454 - £128 (only get this over the 350 if you need optical out) - have a look here
I wouldn't use Richer Sounds - too many horror stories and I've had bad experiences myself with them

No :)

Whoops - sorry I misread the built in as supporting :)

I mailed BE-direct and they state that it DOES include a 5.1 / DTS decoder. Now I'm really

Is either the Acoustic Solutions DVD451 SILVER (Multi-region) at £89.95 or the LG DVD4950 SILVER (Multi-region) at £139.95 any good. Both have built in DD5.1 / DTS decoders.

Why do you want built in decoders?

Likely his AMP/System doesn't have one.

Correct. The amp I have for my second system only has a pro-logic decoder.

How would that work with the rear speakers - I mean Pro Logic doesn;t have rear separation (oo err) does it?

No it doesn`t, only the Pioneer Dv656 upwards has this:)
You`ll be hard pressed to find something like a Pioneer / Tosh / Sony for budget money with the feature, although many of the budget supermarket clones offer onboard decoders.
HTH?

Amp isn't doing the decoding,DVD player is.
Many ProLogic amps had 5.1 inputs ready to be connected to a DVD player with a 5.1 Decoder.

So Pro Logic systems have 6 speakers as well - so that as long as they're connected to a 5.1 source this drives the speakers?

Yes. My prologic amp has front left, right and centre, rear left and right and a sub-woofer. It's a Sony and the sound is surprisingly good for a prologic setup. Despite this I would rather have true 5.1 sound like I have on my main system. For this I need a DVD player with built in decoder.
I have seen an LG player for £139.95 which fits my requirements (multiregion, 5.1 decoder) but don't know much about this make. I've seen quite a few LG products over the past few months but am unsure of the quality of the brand.

Yes the DVD451 has a built in DD decoder, and the picture quality is acceptable on a basic setup. I would recommend spending another 20-30 quid and go for the Pioneer DV350 instead..BIG improvement :)
