Question:
Preparing to buy a new tv and am having serious difficulty settling on a type. At first i had decided on a rear projection model (specifically a toshiba 42pw23p) but have read some some stuff that has put me off. Now i am swaying towards a 36" tube as crts seem to be less hassle - even though i really want something bigger and slightely less expensive. My quandry comes down to the following points:
a) Screen Burn - is this a real problem, i have an xbox but rarely play it for more than an hour or so at a time. However, my girlfriend watches alot of mtv - i know no matter how many times i stress to her the significance of the problem she will merely think i'm being anal. I have read on another thread that toshiba acknowledge screen burn can occur within 20mins yet deem it outside of the guarentee.
b) Bulb Life - am i really going to have to replace them after 2 - 3 years. Forums etc. seem to think i will yet retailers say otherwise.
c) 50hz - anyone got a 50hz rear projection screen, if so hows the picture?
d) are there any anti-screen burn rptvs on the market?
If anyone has the particular model i'm thinking about (42pw23p) would you recommend it?

36'' tubes seem to be particularly affected by goemetry problems.

Loewe have brought out a 40" CRT..
Bet that's light..
All TVs have pitfalls...
Most CRTs have geo problems.. Screenburn is an issue for RPTVs..
What about plasma? Can get a 42" for £2.5k now..
Get a nice big Rear Projection TV. As long as you buy "Avia Home Calibration DVD" to setup your RPTV's brightness, contrast, colour ect..., screenburn generally won't be an issue as long as you don't leave a static image on the screen for more than 2 or 3 hours. You can get a 50" Widescreen Toshiba with Dolby Digital Surround for about £1800 now. Alternatively if you don't need Dolby Digital Surround or such a big TV, you can get a 42" Widescreen Toshiba with Nicam Digital Stereo for about £1000.
