Sony Minidisc deck help
Question:

Hi all
Just bought a Sony Minidisc deck from my local curries for £19.95. Cheap you might think - but it's a deck designed to connect into one of their Micro Hifi's. (It's model number is MDS-SP55)
On the back is just a 19pin connector (and flat cable supplied) which plugs into the tuner of the hifi plus 3 optical connectors (2 in, 1 out).
Now, all I want is to power it up as there are enough controls on the unit itself to use it stand alone. So:
Anyone know the pinout of this 19pin cable? (Or anyone fancy putting a multimeter to the back of their sony micro hifi if they have one?)

Answers:

Opened it up and the port's labelled - now to work out what they mean:
01: TC-R
02: MD-R
03: AGND
04: MD-L
05: TC-L
06: REC-L
07: AGND
08: REC-R
09: GND
10: PCPON
11: PDOWN
12: IIC-CLK
13; DGND
14: IICDATA
15: D +5.6V
16: -UNREG (L)
17: +UNREG (L)
18: MGND
19: +UNREG (H)

Here are my *guesses*, use at your own risk:
01: TC-R
02: MD-R
03: AGND
04: MD-L
05: TC-L
Looks like two stereo outputs sharing a common ground. Perhaps TC-* are to be routed to a tape deck and MD-* are for the amplifier?
06: REC-L
07: AGND
08: REC-R
Looks like the stereo input for analogue recording with a common ground?
09: GND
10: PCPON
11: PDOWN
Dunno about these. PDOWN sounds like it could be way for the system to power down the unit remotely?
12: IIC-CLK
13: DGND
14: IICDATA
15: D +5.6V
Looks like the power supply for the digital circuits plus a synchronous interface (I2C?) which may allow the remote control of the unit and, possibly, digital input for recording from a CD?
16: -UNREG (L)
17: +UNREG (L)
18: MGND
19: +UNREG (H)
The unit power supply? I would assume that this unit does not have its own mains lead? Figuring out what voltages you need to attach here could be fun!

In agreement here:
No equipment here at work :D , so eyesight alone produces this:
01: TC-R - N/C
02: MD-R - (small chip) pin ??
03: AGND - Chassis Ground
04: MD-L - (small chip) pin 26 (VOUTL)
05: TC-L - N/C
06: REC-L - (small chip) pin 2 (VINL)
07: AGND - Ground
08: REC-R - (small chip) pin 4 (VINR)
09: GND - Ground
10: PCPON - (big chip) ?
11: PDOWN - ?
12: IIC-CLK - ?
13; DGND - Ground
14: IICDATA - ?
15: D +5.6V - N/C
16: -UNREG (L) - N/C
17: +UNREG (L) - Power Regs
18: MGND - Power Regs
19: +UNREG (H) - N/C

Makes sense for inputs on pins 2 & 4 - they're left and right inputs which go straight to ADCs
Pins 24 and 26 are probably VOUTR and VOUTL - the outputs (ie to the AMP/tape deck) from the MD inputs -> ADCs -> DSP -> DACs
So I guess that you could well be right with the powerup and down, plus the inputs are pretty much sorted as well as the Power lines. Just hope it works without the data lines being used (hopefully that's just for the I2C bus to the main display and control lines elsewhere on the hifi)

Voltage regs are a 2933 (3.3v) and 7805 (5.0v). The datasheet for the 7805 says that the input has to be typically 2.0v above output, so I'll stick in 7.5v or so and see what happens later :)

Works great! :)
(Pin 9 is also N/C I didn't realise)
Simply connected a ~8v supply (unregulated) to pins 17 and 11, and ground to all the grounds and it worked powered up. The PDOWN (pin 11) taken high turns it on.
Was able to playback/record/erase minidiscs fine - just a nightmare to navigate round the menus when I haven't got the screen on the rest of the hifi to see what I'm doing!
I believe it uses I2C to talk to the rest of the hifi, and isn't that a pretty standard data protocol/format? Might be able to make my own display through my PC or something - but it does work stand alone for now.
Only tried the optical in/out so far - will do analogue soon though. But overall, well worth the £20 and a little investigative work.

I hope you're doing this for fun as it sounds like an awful lot of work for a very small saving. ;)

Yeah - kind of. It's just a little project that I often give myself to keep me amused :)

Just to let y'all know - these are going on ebay for £40 (buy it now for £80)! So you could make some money there :)
