Question:
Right, I'm getting a bit 'wazzed-off' waiting on Jungle to tell me one way or the other whether I'm getting a nice new 32" WS TV.
So can you helpful peeps out there put me right on a few things?
I wanna nice, biggish TV. No bigger than 32".
Is there any point in me looking at getting a Pro-Logic TV, if I've already made my mind up to get an independent amp and speakers?
If not, what NICAM make/model gives an acceptable performance for, say up to £500. Plus, is the difference THAT big between 32" & 28"? I mean, should I be going for as good a build as I can afford in 32" or a best make I can in a 28"?
Plus, do all new TV's cope with the PAL60/NTSC output that my DVD player pumps out?
Now to matters of sound ......
I'm thinking of getting the Yamaha HTiB-45 kit, just to break myself in to the whole techie side of DVD sound set-up that tobe honest is a bit beyond me at the moment. Is this all-in-one kit still the best to go for or are there other better kits on the market for a similar price?
Would I be better still using my currrent amp & speakers for CD output?
Please help me soon, cos I've had a shocking week at work and am REALLY in the mood to spend!
All recommendations greatly received :)
:(

No.

Yes.

Depends what it is.
I've tried to answer what I can.
Dave
Cheers Dave. Glad someone has replied cos I've got an itchy credit card and was going to order Yahama Kit tonight!!
So just leaves TV, do I just go for most expensive 32" NICAM I can afford??
Go for a Panasonic one ;-)
You takin' the mess Legendary?
Was looking for a serious answer on the TV front cos it's a big buy for me. Don't want to be left with something nasty, do!?!
So I'll put the question out again, 28" WS and upto the price of my budget or 32" WS and upto the same price?
Here is my (in places controversial) advice:
1) If you are buying a separate sound system - which is a GOOD THING - then the sound provided by the TV needs to be sufficient only for watching the stuiff that you won't want to turn your audio system on for - eg the news, soaps, animal hospital - whatever. Basic NICAM stereo is fine for this purpose. After all you'll be turning it down when you have your amp on.
2) IMHO TVs are on the threshold of a major shift away from traditional dinosaur CRTs towards affordable flat panels (LCD and/or Plasma). In a few years, my guess is that the majority of TVs will be flat panels. CRTs have many intrinsic flaws which are addressed to varying degrees by electronics - you will have read about convergence, geometry and bounce being good or bad on such-and-such a Sony or Panasonic or Philips or whatever. Plus, of course their huge size and weight.
So, here is the controversial bit: Buy a cheap TV. Invest the money saved in a better sound system. And save up so that in, say, 3 years, you can ditch the cheap TV and buy a state-of-the-art flat panel (costing at a guess, about 1/3 - 1/2 what they do now).
I have read, but can't comment from personal experience, that the Schneider TVs sold by Asda have a picture performance that comes quite close to (or exceeds) that offered by the big names. So, on that basis, Asda would be a good place to look.

Personally I would go for the biggest when it comes to WS sets.
But what LV426 says about buying a cheap one now and upgrading in a few years is very interesting and should be thought about.
I had my 28" Sony WS for 6 years and have just upgraded to a 40" RPTV.
Dave
If your budget is 500 for a TV, then go for a cheap and cheerful one like the Beko at Tescos. For the money they are an admirable performer and you get 32" RGB with change. If money was no object, then a Loewe Aconda would be the way to go and demonstrate why not all CRT based TVs are dinosaurs :)
There is a panasonic 28 or 32 inches widescreen TV which is worth a look.
You also should look at Philips or Sony or Toshiba as well.
Have a look at www.unbeatable.co.uk or www.empire-direct.co.uk
If you want serious advice buy Home Cinema Choice magazine for reviews of TV. www.homecinemachoice.com - if you need a review of TV you might be interested in buying.
If I were given the chance I would buy a panasonic 32inches widescreen TV if I haven't got enough to buy Panasonic 42 inches Plasma TV.
Oh, I dunno what to do
The Panasonic TX28PL1C1 looks ok to me, but then I could also get the 32" Beko for over £100 less. I reckon though that £515 inc delivery is the top of my budget, so I suppose I get one of the following :-
1) a cheap as chips 28" and save some cash
2) the best 28" I can afford - which I reckon is this Panasonic, but I'm willing to be put right on that front!
3) the Beko 32" and hunt around for something to keep the monster on
Any ideas there??
Well since you've stretched your budget on the TV can I suggest a trip to Ikea.
Yes it's hell on earth as far as a shopping experience goes.
However, take a look at their birch effect MDF TV furniture. Cannot find their catalougue at the mo but they do a monster TV stand with 3 bays, 2 with shelves. room for the VCR, Sky box, DVD and seperate amp plus space in the third bay for your subwoofer when not on the floor.
Comes in at about £50 and it is very solid.
For an extra £18 you can add a swivel stand designed for widescreen TV. Same material.
20 more mins until shopping time!!!! Any more views?
And would the 100hz model be a MUCH better option?
Gone for the 100hz TX28PL10, only 28" but might have been a little bit too greedy to think I could fit a 32" in any room!
Scraped about and found the extra cash (I hope anyway). Just hope I've done the right thing, although it's got to be better than a 4 or 5 yr old Sony 21" 4:3:nuts:  :smokin:
