Question:
I'm taking delivery of one of these today from Paul Taylor.
I'll post some thoughts on its performance this evening.
Video wise it now uses a 12 bit 108 mhz chip which is technically twice as fast as the 900.
Looks wise it has returned to the look of the 735 which is no bad thing.
Sounds a good player for 179.99!

?? - it's £379 and the replacement for the 900!.
I'd seen reports that it would be £179 but that was never likely.
Sony Centres will undoubtedly price it at £600 or so!
CLH Is there more information online anywhere?
Here you go, add some scarts in mind!
http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/HardwareReviews/Sony905/Sony905.html
Cheers... sounds nice but I think I'll wait to hear more from folk who have final production spec machines :p
Shurely that's not the remote you get with the 905 - looks like a step backwards from the one supplied with my 735!
Mines final production and multi region.
I'm afraid that is the remote. It is a step back but then I preferred the remote on my old 735 the most.

I'm being facitious. A magazine that I bought recently reviewed it (pictures too) as a sub 200 player and never even raved about it that much. Their credibility must now be questioned I'd say.
And they quoted the price as 179.99.

Indeed, Essential Home Cinema I think you mean. If it is they gave it four for picture and five for sound.
The aussie guy on the above link says it is amongst the best pictures he has ever seen.
We'll know later when I use the thing.

Thats the very rag! And here's me saying to my mate, don't buy a 700 get this, its cheaper and will go with your STR1070 better. Thats it when I get home, I'm digging out their e-mail address and blasting one off to them.
Incidentally, noticed that What TV&Video magazine has a review of the new 705 and they call it a DVD-A/SACD player. Oooops.

Actually I sort of based my decision on that and Home Cinema Choice. Both rated the 705 as a five star product. The 900 is also second in the over £500 DVD category in HCC.
Applying logical evolution and a new video DAC the 905 should be very good indeed. Off home shortly!
OK, quick test so far:--
Picture is pretty much equal to my Arcam DV88.
Sound is better. Mechanism is quieter.
Good quality CD player though not as good or warm as the Arcam.
Silly remote and a step backwards from old model.
Silent mechanism, good looks.
Still probably the best DVD player I've owned as a whole. (That's on the basis of some quick tests. More to come)

LOL:clap:
Don't worry John the picture in component mode on your TV will outstrip the Sony.
CD quality is only about 60% as good as the Arcam.
Out of Witters 6 posts (as of yesterday) and he's been registered an awful long time, more than half were on my thread. Seems a strange time to find your voice!
Am I being completely thick? Did I read the review @www.michaeldvd.com.au correctly, the new 905 doesn't have RGB or SCART??? Why not???
Are you supposed to use S-video? A poor version of RGB!
Component fine- if your TV can handle it....

It's an Australian model review. UK models have 2 scarts and RGB.

OK.
picture quality is excellent. It's easily on par with the 900 model and almost as good as the Arcam DV88 I had. I wish Sony would choose one picture setting though. I'm not keen on all the setup options.
Sound is fantastic. Easily on a par with the Arcam as far as DD/DTS is concerned. Stereo sound is about 60% of the Arcam but it does have the advantage of SACD which is superb.
The transport is whisper quiet during playback.
Construction is solid. Looks are good. Remote is poor.
Hope that helps.
Thanks for that. For the price difference though, I'll still point my M8 in the direction of the Sony 700 from Richer.
any comments on layer change ?
not that i'm obsessed with this factor , must get out more . . .

No, I've been watching West Wing all week so haven't watched anything that long. Will have look at some time over the weekend.
Sammy709, don't forget that the 700 series has only 1 scart and the 900/905 have two. Great for RGB passthrough.

I have a Sony 700 (& 2 Sammy 709s ;-)) ) and can confirm that it does have 2 scarts and does RGB passthru.
Its 200 quid cheaper than the Sony 905 too.
(Thats unless the Sony905 retails for 179.99 of course :norty: )
Oh, well it must be the 705 (the new one) that doesn't
update: the 905 appears to have 40 disc memory. Can't recall whether my 900 had it.
Stop a disc, take it out, put it away for a few days, stick it in and start from the same point. Clever!
the 900 has 200 disc memory

Yes, I know the 900 has 200 disc memory but is it condition memory (i.e. remembers the settings) or RESTART memory?
Where is the best place to buy a 905 then?? I could really do with FBI Skip as well as RCE, and it has to be black!
Cheers

Mine was £379 from multiregionmagic.
It's cheaper I believe from AVLAND.
Customer service from multiregionmagic was excellent.
still doesnt allow ntsc->Pal conversion:(
any news on layer changes yet ?
also - any noise whilst playing - i.e. rotational noise ?
those with hearing like bats get annoyed at any noise
and i dont have a home cinema set-up tpo drown it out
on a lighter note - what films have you played on it yet ?
thanks for your help
garywork, layer change appears to be about half a second ish, not quick but not awful.
rotation noise during the movie is wholly non existent to my ears. There is some menu search noise but nothing else.
So far I have been trawling through everything trying to trip it up.
LOTR looks great and sound is superb.
Back to the Future seemed very good this morning (only a few minutes play).
Thomas the Tank Engine plays flawlessly (and seems to be on for hours at a time)(my son's favourite if you hadn't guessed).
The Fifth Element superbit was superb. Very colourful, very sharp.
The West Wing plays very well with excellent sound. The video is as good as it can be with that transfer.
Futurama is also very colourful and sharp.
It appears to be an excellent player all in all and there is nothing about it that really bugs me apart from the awful remote. Wouldn't mind seeing if an old 735 remote works with it!
UPDATE:
Given that the remote is rubbish I ordered a Sony RMT120 remote from the old DVPS735.
It arrived today. Not only does it work everything (which was pretty much expected) the jog dial control on the remote also worked. In addition there was a TV/DVD display switcher which worked which the 905 doesn't even have!
And of course it glows in the dark.
Hooray!!!

CLH - the player sounds interesting.
is the chip definitely running at 108mhz?
most manufacturers only quote this sort of figure when running in progressive scan mode and not interlaced (normal TV) mode.
so 54mhz perhaps?
its the same situation with the current players like the tosh 510, 54mhz chip but only runs at 27mhz with normal TVs.
do you have any web links to the specs by the way?

To back up CLH, remember multiregionmagic are actually a retail store with a website, AVland is website only. Difference in price reflects operating costs, and means that you cannot actually go in person if you wanted - just a small point:) Obviously if you are miles away then it doesn`t matter

I dont know. However it doesn't do progressive scan, I'm not even sure the US version does so hopefully it is using the full monty.
The specs are up on avland, homecinemaheaven etc to have a look at.

that aussie dvd link implies that the US version does progscan, so its probably running at half rate on the european version, 54mhz.
The digital processing board handles both audio and video. Apart from a number of memory chips (including a 16 Mb Flash memory that probably holds the firmware) I spotted an Analog Devices ADV7300A - this provides six "12bit 108MHz Noise Shaped Video DAC" (as proclaimed on the front panel) channels. I suspect the player only uses three channels (for component interlaced video output), and the other three channels are reserved for progressive scan output which is not available in the Australian model.
not a major problem, but should be pointed out in their spec.
its similar when other players quote a 10bit 54mhz chip.
