Toshiba SD220e v1.5 firmware query
Question:

Recently bought this player from my local Richer Sounds. I wanted to check the firmware as previous versions (v1.3 and earlier) had known problems with playing discs with branching (such as The Matrix).
Version 1.4 firmware fixes that problem, so when I checked mine and it shows as v1.5 I was intrigued to see what else this fixes. I therefore e-mailed Toshiba Technical Support to ask them.
They have just e-mailed back to say v1.4 is the latest (as of 22 July) and they are not aware of a v1.5.
Can anyone else throw any light on this as it is slightly worrying, although I have heard of other Toshiba SD220 owners who have bought one with v1.5 firmware, so maybe its Toshiba that are wrong.
Thanks, Anastasis

a bod a Richersounds told me they source their players from Toshiba Europe not Toshiba UK. This may be a reason why as it might not have filtered through to the UK yet.
I have the v1.4 and everything works fine on it, even has no problems playing DVD+RW disks

Anastasis, have you experienced any problems at all with the 220e, or are you just checking the firmware version out of interest? Only I was hankering after a Tosh, but Justin has warned me off as he has had plenty of later models come back faulty. Now I'm wondering which make/model to plump for but the Tosh does seem a good buy at the moment. Then again the Pioneer DV350 sounds good too esp at £129-ish at CDWow.
Did you take the Richer guarantee? 3 yrs g'tee with the money back at the end can't be bad. :)

Did you take the Richer guarantee? 3 yrs g'tee with the money back at the end can't be bad. :) The only problem I have experienced with a Toshiba SD220e was the last one I had which had v1.3 firmware. I returned that player to the retailer for a refund after they refused to rectify the problem.
As I said, the one I bought recently from my local Richer Sounds has v1.5 firmware. My interest was to find out what other things this version has, as v1.4 fixes the previous branching problem. The suggestion that this is a European import may be correct as there were two manuals in the box, one for Europe, one for the UK.
Apart from the original problem, I think the Toshiba is great. This is also born out my numerous magazine reviews singing its praises. It has also won quite a few group tests against similar priced players.
At £134.95 it represents terrific value. And yes I did buy the extra guarantee from RS which seems a very good deal. I just need to remember to cash it in with a month to go.
I've heard good things about the Panasonic DV350 too, including in one recent review, although as it is very new perhaps the Toshiba represents a better bet.
By the way, were the reported returns on the Toshiba due to the firmware problem?
Hope this helps,
Anastasis

Sorry for delayed response, A, been away ... and thanks a lot for your comments, they helped. :)
Thanks for the reply - Justin commented on a thread I started here &threadid=99995 and then I did a search for Toshiba and there are a few more in similar vein, like this ... &threadid=104053&highlight=toshiba
The 220 still looks a good machine on paper to me; whatever, it'll be my first DVD player and I really want something up to £150 until recordable DVD gets sorted out price & format wise. Don't wanna buy DVD rec equivalent of a Betamax
